S-chanf is known for one thing above all else in winter - as the finish line of the Engadin Ski Marathon. On no other day than the second Sunday in March are so many people happy to see S-chanf. Legitimate, after 42 kilometres on cross-country skis.
Before you reach S-chanf, the so-called Golan Heights await you - no sooner have you conquered one hill than the next one comes. The best preparation for this? Training in this very region. There are over 240 kilometres of cross-country trails throughout the Upper Engadine. Around S-chanf, skaters, classic skiers and cross-country skiers with dogs will find fantastic conditions.
The official marathon trail ends in S-chanf, but you shouldn't miss the subsequent trail to Zernez on another day! It runs for 15 kilometres through unspoilt nature and for the most part through a fairytale winter forest.
Opposite the village, a small drag lift leads up to the "Bügls" hill, where everything revolves around the first steps on skis. It's not about speed here, on the contrary: small skill exercises on the easy slope, stem turns, hopping over moguls … here the little snow bunnies can get a taste of the big wide world of snow sports in peace and quiet. Parking is available right by the lift.
Those who have already tried skiing or snowboarding for the first time can go to the nearby Zuoz ski area. The larger areas are also easily accessible from S-chanf by public transport or car.
Discover the picturesque winter landscape of S-chanf. A two-hour winter hike allows you to enjoy the tranquillity of nature while exploring the unspoilt beauty of the surroundings. Please take care not to leave the marked trail in order to protect the wildlife sanctuaries that extend to the right and left of the path.
Turn your return journey from the Griatschouls Alpine hut into a winter adventure with a relaxing sledge ride. The sledge glides carefully through the snow-covered landscape and lets you really enjoy the beautiful winter atmosphere in S-chanf.
The heart of S-chanf is made of ice: there is a natural ice rink in the centre of the village.
In S-chanf, schoolchildren are happy to be led onto the ice, as the ice rink right next to the school building and in the centre of the village attracts visitors during the cold season. The Cafe Puntschellina is located in the immediate vicinity, where parents can treat themselves to cake and coffee while their children skate outside.
The winter hike starts at the cosy Cinuos-chel-Brail railway station and takes you through snow-covered S-chanf. Over the narrow valley road and through the snow-covered alleyways of Chapella, a small, idyllic village. The winter hiking trail then winds its way through the forest to Susauna and reveals the enchanting landscape of S-chanf. The village itself impresses with its typical architecture and a historic centre that invites you to explore.
The trail continues, turns off below the railway station and leads you to the famous village centre of Zuoz. Old Engadine houses with characteristic bay windows and ornate sgraffito decorations await you there. Shortly before beautiful Madulain, your hike crosses the Inn and the imposing panorama of Piz Kesch comes into view.
Your winter voyage of discovery ends in La Punt, where the trail ends along the Inn bridge. There, impressive Engadine and patrician houses merge to form an impressive sight that emphasises the beauty of this region.
