The library of Maloja was founded by Gaudenzio Giovanoli (1893-1977), a teacher in Maloja for over four decades, a socialist and a convinced advocate of the cooperative movement. The library is not "only" a public lending library. Visitors will find numerous documents on the history of the international workers' movement and the consumer cooperative movement in Bergell, and all the publications of the religious socialist Leonhard Ragaz are also available.
The public library offers its visitors novels, science books and documentaries about Bergell and the Engadine, as well as art books and a special room for children's books. It also owns the complete collections of the Almanacco del Grigioni Italiano, the Quaderni grigionitaliani and the Terra Grischuna. The book stock amounts to about 16,000 items. Besides books, the Biblioteca also lends CDs, videos and DVDs.
