Hiking bliss amid a winter idyll

Muottas Muragl

Hiking bliss amid a winter idyll

The best recipe for a wonderful winter hiking day on Muottas Muragl? Very simple: Take white snow, season it with blue sky, generously sprinkle it with golden light, and savour everything with a healthy portion of joy. The ingredients are available in the Engadin in abundance – so please help yourself!

Snowshoeing on Muottas Muragl

Everybody loves Muottas Muragl! Still, you won’t find overcrowded paths or trails up here. On the contrary, you only have to walk a few steps from the footpath into the unspoilt nature to be cradled in snowy stillness. Novices best try the easy circular trail which leads for 3.5 kilometres through the winter landscape and starts and finishes at the funicular summit station. You can round off a wonderful day in suitable style by enjoying a romantic sunset from the panoramic restaurant of the Romantik Hotel Muottas Muragl located near the funicular summit station.

Wisdom by the wayside

Winter hiking on the Philosophers’ Trail is «meaningful» in the truest sense of the word as it not only provides fascinating views of the Engadin high valley but also offers insight into the ways of thinking of famous philosophers. Route markers bearing aphorisms and wise adages by Friedrich Nietzsche, Thomas Mann, Hermann Hesse, Albert Einstein and other smart minds will set you thinking while the numerous benches along the trail serve as gentle invitations to linger and ponder. By the way, labelling this route as «the» Philosophers’ Trail is not quite correct as there are actually three versions of this trail which offer different lengths and levels of difficulty: an easy (blue) strolling promenade, the slightly longer (red) version for more experienced winter hikers, and a quite challenging (black) two hour circular hike to Lej Muragl. Do you fancy a snack or cup of hot chocolate to kick off or cap off this magical winter experience? We recommend that you enjoy your culinary break on the lovely sun terrace of the Romantik Hotel and let your mind go astray once more.
