Halberstadt in the summer of 1990. Maren (Sandra Hüller), Robert (Max Riemelt) and Volker (Ronald Zehrfeld) have known and loved each other since childhood.

With the help of Robert's uncle, who works in a huge underground tunnel system just outside of town, they break into it. In one of the tunnels they come across the GDR's millions: endless amounts of banknotes, stored here to rot. The three smuggle backpacks full of them out. Together with friends and people from the neighborhood, they develop an ingenious system to legally exchange the now worthless money for goods - and outwit the incoming Westerners and their capitalism.
