Hiking on the glacier is a unique feeling. It takes time to get used to walking with crampons but you’ll end up being amazed – by the ragged beauty of the high-alpine glacier world, the ice masses and mighty nature. The glacier tours offered by the Pontresina Mountaineering School can also be tackled without any alpine experience and are suitable for children in part. Yet they also require surefootedness and some stamina, as you will be hiking in high mountains for a long time. The starting point for the mountain tours and glacier hikes is the Diavolezza mountain station.
Palü glacier hike
The circular tour on the Diavolezza (2,973 m) starts with a rocky descent. You then find yourself on the mighty Pers Glacier and hike towards Piz Palü – with its three summits that make it possibly the most striking and beautiful mountain in the Bernina Range. Duration: around 5 hours. **
Diavolezza–Morteratsch glacier hike
The hike from Diavolezza and via the Pers and Morteratsch glaciers down towards Morteratsch (1,896 m) takes around seven hours. The part of the tour on the ice is becoming shorter each year due to the decrease in the glacier tongue. An impressive mountain experience and a lesson in the effects of climate change.
Crap Pers glacier trekking
This glacier trekking along the route up to Piz Palü is almost a small high tour. With ice picks and rope, you go through the impressive Cambrena Brüche and up to the Crap Pers viewpoint at 3,250 m. Tour duration: approx. 6 hours.
